A country of immigrants

The event will be held in english.

Germany is in massive need of workforce. In a recent study, Boston Consulting Group estimates that the shortage of skilled workers costs over 85 billion euros in economic output per year.

In a digital lunch briefing, we would like to inform about and discuss the planned immigration reform and also touch upon issues concerning skilled labour immigration beyond the scope of the legal framework. We need to promote Germany as a place to live and work and we have to reduce the bureaucratic hurdles that accompany the immigration process substantially.

We would like to discuss with you on January 31st, starting at 12:30h (CET).

Here is our agenda for the digital exchange:

After the address of welcome by Gyde Jensen, Vice-Chair of the Free Democrats in the German Bundestag we will host a panel discussion with

  • Dr. Ann-Veruschka Jurisch, Rapporteur for Labour Migration of the Free Democrats in the German Bundestag
  • Dr. Jens Brandenburg, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research
  • Dr. Stefan Dreyer, Regional Director South East Asia for the Goethe-Institut
  • Marko Walde, Chief Representative of The Delegation of the German Industry and Commerce in Vietnam (GIC/AHK Vietnam)

We are looking forward to the digital exchange.

Projections indicate a need of net migration of 400,000 individuals per year just to keep the current population size. Soon, the so called baby-boomer-generation will retire, often being employed in technical and industrial jobs or working as craftsmen. Further, the industrial digitisation and new businesses in the tech industry need IT-specialists. There is no doubt, that if we want Germany to stay a country of innovation, development and craftsmanship, we will need scientists, educators, caregivers, medical personnel and many more. This is why the FDP in the German Bundestag has been pressing for a comprehensive immigration reform which introduces a points-based system like the Canadian Comprehensive Ranking System for a very long time. Accordingly, it was one of our policies of priority in the coalition talks.

In November, the Federal government introduced the key parameters of the new reform. Soon, parliament will debate the ministerial draft bill.
